Lakshwadeep tops Jan Dhan account rich list; J&K reports 357% rise in average balance since 2017

The government is looking to expand the scope of the PMJDY scheme to track digital footprint of accounts in a bid to offer additional products and services to its beneficiaries.

The average balance in Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts has nearly doubled over the last seven years to Rs 4,352 in August, as compared to Rs 2,254 seven years ago.

A Moneycontrol analysis shows that some states have reported far greater gains than others.

Uneven gains?

For instance, the erstwhile state of Jammu Kashmir, including Ladakh, has reported a 357 per cent rise in average balance during this period. The average balance has increased to Rs 6,616 per account from Rs 1,446 over the past seven years.
