The transition to the Bharat Stage-VI (BS-VI) emission norms, which has to be completed before April 2020, has auto manufacturers in flux. This shift warrants significant technology upgrades, prompting manufacturers to mull the feasibility of developing BS-VI compliant diesel motors at the cost of delaying their ambitions of developing a strong hybrid portfolio.

In an interview with Moneycontrol, Maruti Suzuki chairman R C Bhargava mentioned that his company was facing a dilemma over investing in developing new-generation diesel engines or hybrid motors, given that both variants will be priced on par once the new emission norms kick in.

What will be the likely cost premium of diesel and hybrids over their petrol counterparts? How will Maruti Suzuki recalibrate its strategy before BS-VI becomes effective?
