Conversation around green transformation needs to be changed from only benefitting young people but farmers and workers too, said Erik Solheim, Former Executive Director at UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme).
Speaking at a panel in Network18’s Rising Bharat Summit on March 19, Solheim said, “Conversation around green transformation needs to change from young people to it benefitting farmers and workers as well."
He added that India has undertaken several green energy initiatives such as building the largest solar and wind plant in the world in Gujarat by the Adani Group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative to install rooftop solar system in 1 crore households, which creates opportunities and jobs for people. It also ensures that India does not have to buy crude oil from Russia, Saudi Arabia and other countries, and utilise the saved money for people in the country.
India is dependent on imports of crude oil for over 85 percent of its requirements and sources oil from several countries including the Middle-Eastern and Russia and the US.
Meanwhile, the country has also ramped up green energy initiatives to meet its net-zero emissions target by 2070.
