Mumbai to enjoy power portability soon; can pick discoms

Private power discoms have been asked to keep tariff of up to 300 units same across the state of Maharashtra.

With Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan saying consumers of Reliance Energy have the liberty to shift to cheaper Tata Power, Mumbai may soon become the first Indian city to enjoy power portability. 

The CM has clarified that the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), the regulatory authority was party to the decision. The two private discoms have agreed that those consumers who want to migrate to Tata Power for its lower tariff, can do so.

The government has asked both private power discoms to keep power tariff for up to 300 units uniform across Maharashtra. The modus operandi has not been made clear by the CM as yet. This is possibly the first breakthrough on the issue of Mumbai power tariff .

No directives have been given by the state on the likely timeline for this migration though the state government claims the process has actually begun. However, it is still not clear if the two private discoms have communicated the decision to their respective consumers.
