The Finance Ministry has kicked off pre-Budget consultations and one such meeting with farmer bodies is under way. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley along with Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das and Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa will be discussing issues related to the sector.
The meeting is being attended by two farmer bodies apart from the Agriculture Secretary and Joint Secretary. Among private players Cargill Foods India Chairman Siraj Chaudhry is also in attendance. CNBC-TV18 spoke to Former Seemandhra MP Y Shivaji who said apart from budgetary presentations, the farmers’ body will also focus on issues related to demonetisation.
Shivaji noted the agriculture sector is most affected by demonetisation. It is harvesting time for Kharif crops but farmers are unable to sell their produce due to a cash crunch, he says, adding, some rural areas do not even have adequate number of ATMs or bank branches.
Central trade unions (CTUS) are also slated to meet the Finance Minister later today for pre-Budget consultations.Watch video for more...
