Automobile sales numbers have started trickling in. CNBC-TV18's Swati Khandelwal Jain gives a lowdown.
Sales of India's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki rose 28.2% in March to 1,21,952 lakh units as against 95,123 sold in the same month last year. While its domestic sales went up 38.8% to 1,10,424 from 79,530 year-on-year (YoY), exports dropped 26.1% to 11,528 units versus 15,593 exported in March last year. Their new launch Kizashi saw total sales of 103 units in March. Total sales of auto-maker Mahindra & Mahindra for March 2011 stood at 37,522 units as against 31,698 units sold in March 2010. "Overall, 18% is very handsome growth and we are pretty pleased with the month gone by," says senior VP marketing of the automotive division Vivek Nayer. "We have also registered highest ever monthly sales in both domestic and exports. Our domestic sales have grown 19%, export sales have grown 16% and both of these numbers are the highest ever numbers at 35,486 for domestic and 2,034 for exports," he added. He said that the company's exports have done well and a couple of key markets in Chile and Sri Lanka too are doing extremely well. VE Commercial Vehicles, the joint venture between India's Eicher Motors and Sweden's Volvo sold 5,065 Eicher-branded trucks and buses in March, a growth of 33% on a year-on-year basis. Its domestic sales rose to 4,722 units from 3,649 units. Tata Motors' sold a total 83,363 vehicles in March, a growth of 11% over 75,129 vehicles sold in March 2010. The company's domestic sales were 77,431 units, a 9% growth over 71,024 sold in March last year. Cumulative sales (including exports) for the company for the fiscal stands at 803,322 units a growth of 25% over 642,664 sold last year. From the two-wheeler space, TVS Motor's total sales surged to 1.9 lakh versus 1.5 lkah units on a year-on-year basis, while Hero Honda's total sales for the month rose 24% to 5.15 lakh units (YoY).The cumulative sales data for April-February 2011 showed domestic sales growth of 26.92% over same period last year, a report from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) had stated. "In February 2011 as compared to February 2010, domestic sales grew at 21.32%," it had said. February emerged as high-speed track for auto companies
