With the aim of encouraging more voters to exercise their franchise, these Indore shops have come up with a unique plan. The proprietors of shops located in “56 Dukan”, a famous food hub in the city, have promised free snacks such as “poha” and “jalebi” for voters who cast their votes early before 9 am. They will also have to show the indelible ink mark to avail of the offer.

“Indore occupies the top position in the country as far as cleanliness is concerned. Now we want our city to be at the top in voting as well. For this, we have decided to offer free poha and jalebi to those who cast their vote early,” Gunjan Sharma, president of the 56 Dukan Traders Association, told News18.
However, those who vote after 9 am need not be disappointed. Every voter will be given a special discount of 10 percent on the bill of poha-jalebi throughout that day.
Poha with jalebi is a popular combination for breakfast or snack in Indore. However, this mixture of sweet, spicy and crunchy can be called an invasion gift to Indore. Poha originated in Maharashtra. Under the regime of the Holkars and the Scindias, the dish gained widespread popularity. When the rulers came to Madhya Pradesh, they took over Indore and brought with them poha among other things. Unlike other poha recipes, Indori poha is cooked before tempering it with spices. Then either sev is sprinkled on the top or jalebi or kachori is crushed with it.
"56 Dukan" has been dubbed the “Clean Street Food Hub” by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India as the outlets there meet the set criteria.
According to reports, in the 2018 state assembly elections, there were 14.72 lakh voters in five seats in Indore's urban area and 67 percent voter turnout was recorded. In the 2023 polls, 15.55 lakh voters registered in these five assembly seats. The November 17 assembly election is crucial for the BJP and Congress. The state's significance is heightened ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as it contributes 29 members to the Lok Sabha.
