Fatty liver disease, also known as hepatic steatosis, is a condition characterised by the accumulation of fat in the liver cells. This buildup of fat can lead to liver inflammation and damage over time. There are two main types of fatty liver disease:

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): This type of fatty liver disease occurs in people who drink little to no alcohol. It is often associated with obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and metabolic syndrome. NAFLD ranges from simple fatty liver (steatosis) to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which involves liver inflammation and can progress to more severe liver damage, including cirrhosis and liver failure, says Dr Navin Sharma, senior gastroenterologist at Felix Healthcare.

Fatty liver disease often remains asymptomatic during its early stages, meaning individuals might not realise they have it until it's identified through routine medical examinations, says Dr Sharma. However, as the condition progresses, certain signs and symptoms may manifest.
