What Is Chagas Disease?

Chagas disease, or American sleeping sickness, is an unusual parasitic disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. Their primary mode of transmission is the kiss of the triatomine bugs, or “kissing bugs,” that like to bite human faces while they are sleeping. Though they have hidden traits, they are predominantly found across Latin America. Recent studies discovered that they have also migrated to 32 states in the US, including California, Arizona, Texas, and Tennessee. This new information is concerning for the spread of the disease in the rest of North America.

How Is Chagas Disease Transmitted?

Chagas disease transmission starts when a kissing bug bites a person, usually on the face, and then defecates bite later. The parasite present in the feces can then enter the body through the conjunctival membranes in the eyes or mouth. The disease can also be spread through the consumption of infected food, blood, and organ transplants, as well as during pregnancy.
