If you think only women can have breast issues, you’ll be surprised to know that men can have them too. Breast lumps, which many men ignore unknowingly, can occur in males. Studies suggest that men do have breast tissue, and lumps in that tissue can sometimes signal breast cancer.

Despite being less common in men, the consequences of ignoring symptoms of breast lumps can be severe. Dr Vivek Bande, surgical oncologist, Oncolife Cancer Centre, Satara, Ahmedabad, stresses the importance of awareness and timely medical evaluation for lumps in men’s breasts. “Breast cancer is often seen as a woman’s disease, yet men aren’t immune,” he tells Moneycontrol. “Men’s breast tissue, although smaller, can develop lumps that need immediate attention. Unfortunately, many men dismiss these symptoms, unaware of the risks,” he adds.

This lack of awareness leads to delayed diagnoses, making treatment more difficult. Says Dr Bande, “Men often ignore changes because they don’t expect breast cancer. This is a dangerous misconception.”
