Dhurandhar actor Ranveer Singh’s old interview about working extra hours on film sets has resurfaced online, reigniting the conversation around the controversial 8-hour shift debate that has dominated industry discussions this year.
The clip has gone viral in the wake of Deepika Padukone’s reported decision to walk out of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit after her request for an 8-hour workday was allegedly denied.
The debate first caught fire earlier this year when Deepika, who became a mother in 2024, stepped away from two major projects — Spirit and the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD — citing work-life balance and health reasons.

Many in the industry weighed in, some supporting her stance on humane working conditions while others argued that filmmaking inherently demands longer hours. Now, netizens are drawing attention to her husband Ranveer Singh’s old remarks from 2022, where he appeared to have a different view on long shooting days.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Ranveer had said, “A lot of times people complain… other artists and their management complain ki ‘Yaar tu sabko bigaad raha hai.’ Sab log bolte hain ‘8 ghanta ki shift mein tu 10-12 ghanta kabhi shooting karta hai. Fir hum log ko bhi karna padta hai.’ (A lot of times, people complain… other artists and their management say, ‘You’re messing things up for everyone.’ Everyone says, ‘You sometimes shoot 10–12 hours in an 8-hour shift, so we also have to do it’).”
He added, “But ab 8 ghanta mein woh cheez jo hum chahte hain, woh nahi bani toh theek hai na. Aap karlo thodi si zyada shooting. I’m not that kind of partner who sees it as a transaction. (But if what we want isn’t achieved in 8 hours, then it’s fine. You can do a little extra shooting).”
These comments have now become a flashpoint in online discussions, especially after his wife Deepika’s recent statements promoting the idea of balance and boundaries in the film industry.
In a 2025 interview, Deepika had reflected on the culture of overwork in Bollywood, saying, “We have normalised overworking to the point where exhaustion is seen as dedication. But the human body and mind are not designed for that. Eight hours of work a day is enough for a human being.”
Many social media users have pointed out the contrast between the couple’s past and present stances, noting how life changes — particularly parenthood — can shift priorities. Others, however, argue that both views can coexist, since Ranveer’s comment was made in the context of creative perfectionism, not labor exploitation.
Deepika and Ranveer, who married in 2018, welcomed their daughter Dua Padukone Singh last year. Since then, both have taken a more measured approach to their professional commitments. Deepika has spoken candidly about motherhood and mental health, while Ranveer appears to be pacing his film choices carefully.
On the work front, Ranveer is currently riding high on the success of Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar, while Deepika is preparing for her next project, King, opposite Shah Rukh Khan.
