Ram Gopal Varma, a well-known filmmaker, recently found himself in legal trouble for allegedly posting “morphed” images of prominent political figures from Andhra Pradesh on social media. These images reportedly depicted Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, his family members, and Jana Sena Party Chief Pawan Kalyan in a manner that the complainants found disrespectful.
The issue started when a complaint was filed by Ramalingam, a leader from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), at the Maddipadu police station in Prakasam district.
He alleged that Ram Gopal Varma used social media to share edited images that could tarnish the reputation of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, his son Nara Lokesh, and Lokesh’s wife, Brahmini, as well as Pawan Kalyan.
According to Ramalingam, these posts were aimed at defaming Naidu and his family, undermining their status in society. The police acted on this complaint, registering a case under the Information Technology (IT) Act. The authorities stated that they are investigating the posts and assessing if they violate any legal provisions.
Ram Gopal Varma is not new to controversy. He has previously criticized Chandrababu Naidu and his family, often aligning with the YSR Congress Party, which is politically opposed to the TDP. His 2019 film, Lakshmi’s NTR, took a critical look at Naidu’s alleged involvement in the downfall of NTR, Naidu’s father-in-law and a respected figure in Andhra Pradesh politics. The film delved into sensitive family and political issues, sparking debates and criticisms from TDP supporters.
In response to the complaint, Prakasam Superintendent of Police AR Damodar mentioned that the police had registered a case against Varma for “morphing the photographs of the Chief Minister, his family members, and the Deputy Chief Minister in an offensive way.”
