Veteran actor and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan recently shocked fans with a candid Instagram post as he revealed that a routine health checkup led to a life-saving discovery. Both his carotid arteries were over 75% blocked, putting him at serious risk despite having no visible symptoms. Doctors suggested a neck sonography, alongside a standard heart test, that revealed the silent danger.
In his own words, Rakesh Roshan emphasised, “Although asymptomatic, both my carotid arteries to the brain were above 75 percent blocked… I immediately admitted myself into the hospital and got the preventative procedures done.” Now recovered and at home, he’s urging people over 45 to undergo CT scans and carotid sonography to prevent similar near-misses.

What are carotid arteries?
The carotid arteries are two major blood vessels, one on each side of your neck, that supply oxygen-rich blood to your brain, neck, and face. They are vital to brain function and overall neurological health.
What is carotid artery disease?
Carotid artery disease occurs when plaque (a mixture of fat, cholesterol, and other substances) builds up inside these arteries, making them narrow and restricting blood flow to the brain. This build-up is called atherosclerosis that can lead to transient ischemic attacks (mini-strokes) or full-blown strokes. This can be life-threatening or permanently disabling.
The condition is often asymptomatic until it causes a serious event. This is exactly what happened in Rakesh Roshan’s case - no symptoms, but dangerously high blockage.
Why is it so dangerous?
When a carotid artery becomes too narrow, blood clots may form or pieces of plaque may break off and block smaller arteries in the brain, triggering a stroke. Stroke is the second leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability worldwide.

People over 50, especially men, and those with hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking habits, or a family history of heart disease are at greater risk. Sedentary lifestyles and stress can also contribute.

A simple carotid ultrasound (or sonography) can detect narrowing or blockages in these arteries. CT angiography or MR angiography may be used for more detailed imaging.
Can it be treated or prevented?
Yes. Lifestyle changes like regular exercise, a balanced diet, quitting smoking, and managing cholesterol can help. In more severe cases, procedures such as angioplasty, stenting, or carotid endarterectomy (surgical plaque removal) may be necessary.
