The film, which also features Nayanthara, will be directed by AR Murugadoss. Helmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, this highly anticipated film will release worldwide on August 14th, 2025, just in time for the Independence Day weekend.
A Mega-Budget Spectacle
Coolie is being made on a budget of ₹400 crore and is one of the costliest films ever made in Indian cinema. As always following Lokesh Kanagaraj's style, this film looks like a bundle of slick action blocks, raw narrative, and a breeding star cast! The director is being paid a whopping ₹60 crore in fees, also the biggest ever for him till now, if reports are to be believed.
Rajinikanth Is Asia’s Highest-Paid Actor
Chances are that you’ve already heard the name Rajinikanth before, he is an Indian actor who people love and he’s got this great movie about a robot that also happens to be the highest-paid actor in each of the categories shown, at least according to this chart.
The focus is squarely on Rajinikanth though. The 72-year-old legend has signed a whopping deal for Coolie, over ₹260-280 crore — making him Asia’s most expensive actor. This shocking fee is higher than the fees charged by the likes of Jackie Chan and Aamir Khan.
Power-Packed Star Cast
In this action drama, superstar Rajinikanth is joined by actor Nagarjuna, who portrays an essential role as Simon. Senior Telugu actor charges ₹24 crore for a film Andhra Pradesh’s senior actor alone was ₹35 crore for the film, he is now getting ₹24 crore and is also charging 10 per cent GST.
The film will also feature Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj and Upendra Rao, who seem to be working at their usual market rates, without any major hikes, believe sources.
Adding to the surprise factor, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan too will feature in a special cameo in the film. The actor is reportedly being paid ₹25-30 crore for his small yet impactful role, NewsX mentions.
And actress Pooja Hegde, who wooed the audience with her act in Retro recently will also feature in a special song cameo in Coolie. She is said to be taking home ₹2 crore, Siasat adds.
Musical Backbone and New Promo
The music for the film and background score are by Anirudh Ravichander, he is teaming up with both Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj once again after recording a mega hit with them in their previous release.
To help keep the excitement brewing, the producers recently released a promo video celebrating the 100-day countdown to the film’s premiere. The teaser cut, which went viral in no time, had the snapshots of the cast in their power-packed avatars that took the social media by storm.
