The release of upcoming film starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa, Phule, has been postponed after it reportedly hurt the sentiments of Brahmin community. The CBFC has demanded the makers to make multiple edits before its release on April 25.
Earlier the film was set to release on April 11, 2025 but now the release date has been pushed to April 25.
Phule, a biographical film based on the lives of social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, has sparked controversy following the release of its trailer.
Anand Dave, President of the Brahmin Federation, raised objections after watching the trailer, alleging that the film promotes casteism. He also emphasized the need to recognize the role played by the ‘black Brahmin’ community in supporting the Phules during their reformist journey.
Due to the growing backlash, former state minister Chhagan Bhujbal took the initiative to meet with director Ananth Mahadevan and the film’s producers to discuss the concerns and find a resolution.
Amid these developments, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has stepped in asking the filmmakers to make list of modifications. Among the changes mandated are the removal of a voiceover that discusses the caste system, and the exclusion of certain caste-related terms such as ‘Mahar,’ ‘Mang,’ ‘Peshwai,’ and the ‘Manus system of caste.’

Additionally, some dialogues have been revised to ensure they align with CBFC guidelines and are suitable for public viewing.
Directed by Ananth Mahadevan, Phule depicts Pratik Gandhi as Jyotirao Phule and Patralekhaa as Savitribai Phule. The film will revolve around how the Phule couple worked hard to encourage women equality and fought for their education rights.
