Accusations against Steve Blackman, showrunner of 'The Umbrella Academy,' have surfaced amidst preparations for the show's final season. According to a recent report, twelve individuals comprising writers and support staff have filed a formal HR complaint in January 2023. Their allegations paint a picture of Blackman as a figure steeped in a culture of toxicity, bullying, manipulation, and retaliation within the workplace.

Described as a manipulative and tumultuous presence, Blackman is accused of fostering a toxic environment by fostering competition among his team members and taking undue credit for their work. Additionally, he faces allegations of making derogatory remarks, including sexist, homophobic, and transphobic comments. Notably, the show features Elliot Page, whose character underwent a storyline in Season 3 where he revealed himself as a trans man.

Among the specific grievances, Blackman allegedly terminated a female writing duo—whose contract stipulated shared compensation—shortly after one member gave birth. Despite claims of ignorance regarding her pregnancy, it's noted that Blackman had met with her during her third trimester.

Following the HR complaint, Universal Content Productions, owned by NBC, conducted an internal investigation, which critics described as inadequately thorough. The investigation purportedly absolved Blackman of most accusations, a conclusion vehemently contested by the twelve individuals interviewed by Rolling Stone. They assert that the investigation overlooked crucial testimonies and perspectives, undermining its integrity and the validity of its findings.
