Netflix brings a new animated musical drama, KPop Demon Hunters, and creates a buzz among the fans by dropping a teaser for the upcoming series. Fans have been anticipating the series since then and wondering if the characters in the series are inspired by the actual K-pop icons.
However, filmmaker Maggie Kang has recently shared some behind-the-scenes of the series and admitted that she actually drew inspiration from BTS, BLACKPINK, Stray Kids and more K-pop groups and icons.
In a recent interview with Forbes, Kang said, “I think what I like to talk about is that there are so many certain archetypes that every group has. It's fun to see this conversation happening because everyone's picking the right member who fills that archetype and that kind of role and looks for each group.”
However, the director further noted that she has grown up being surrounded by groups like H.O.T., Seo Taiji, the Boys, etc, which has become a major point of influence.
The demon group, The Saja Boys, was created from an amalgamation of a number of popular K-pop groups. The characters of the group are inspired by groups like Tomorrow X Together, BTS, Stray Kids, ATEEZ, BIGBANG, and Monsta X.
The filmmaker also mentioned that while creating the characters, she and her team focused on basic traits associated with each group member, like the muscular one, the youngest, and the sweetest.
Most of the members of the series have been inspired by K-pop; one character, Mystery, drew inspiration from anime.
KPop Demon Hunters is streaming on Netflix from June 20. The animated series revolves around a world-renowned K-pop girl group balancing their lives in the spotlight with their secret identities as demon hunters.
