Cannes Film Festival 2024: Anya Taylor Joy’s ‘Furiosa’ receives a 6 minute standing ovation at Cannes, Chris Hemsworth tears up

'Furiosa', the latest installment in the 'Mad Max' franchise premiered on Wednesday May 15 at the Cannes Film Festival, with audiences applauding and cheering at its powerful screening.

Director George Miller’s prequel to the ‘hall of famed’ action/adventure ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ (2015) premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival last night. The high-octane film was applauded and cheered contagiously after the screening, receiving a 6-minute standing ovation.

Chris Hemsworth was reportedly “teary-eyed” at the rhapsodic applause with Taylor-Joy blowing kisses into the camera as the cheers echoed throughout the Grand Lumiere Theatre.

The fifth installment in the highly acclaimed George Miller franchise, ‘Furiosa’ is $168 million film. It’s predecessor “Fury Road” was shot with a $350 million dollar budget, while it went on to become the most profitable film of all time grossing over $380 million globally.

“We worked very hard on this film, and it’ll be very interesting to see what you make of it,” Prior to the showing, Miller remarked. “Thank you for having us.”

‘Furiosa’ is set in a post-apocalyptic world before the events of ‘Fury Road’ the synopsis of the film reads, “As the world falls, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers into the hands of a great biker horde led by the warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the wasteland, they encounter the citadel presided over by Immortan Joe. The two tyrants wage war for dominance, and Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.”
