Mohanlal's L2: Empuraan is enjoying success at both the domestic and worldwide box offices. However, the film faced some controversies over its depiction of the alleged Gujarat riots. However, the makers have reportedly edited out some scenes from the film after the court’s order.
However, Antony Perumbavoor has confirmed that the re-edited version of L2: Empuraan was screened at Thiruvananthapuram's Artech cinemas at 11.25 pm on Tuesday.
According to India Today reports, the producer told the media that the film's edits were made voluntarily, without any external pressure. Following re-censorship, 2 minutes and 8 seconds of footage have been removed from L2: Empuraan.
Film’s producer Antony Perumbavoor said, "We did not do this under pressure. We are people who would like to make corrections if our cinema hurts even any one common man."
The producer also dismissed rumors that the team was distancing themselves from director Prithviraj Sukumaran. Additionally, director Major Ravi has previously defended Mohanlal and noted that the actor was not fully aware of the script's content.
Perumbavoor also addressed Ravi’s claims and noted, “It is not right to say that Mohanlal did not know about the movie. We all knew about the movie. There is nothing like we are isolating Prithviraj. We are all together in this movie. We did not make the edits under any pressure.”
However, the producer also gave the green light to the third instalment in the Lucifer franchise despite the ongoing controversy.
For the unversed, the film faced huge backlash over a few scenes allegedly depicting the 2002 Gujarat riots, sparking widespread public backlash and criticism from right-wing groups, prompting the filmmakers to opt for re-censorship.
Following re-censorship by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the film underwent 24 changes, including altering the villain's name from Baba Bajrangi to Baldev. The revisions also involved removing Suresh Gopi's name from the thank-you credits and muting the references to central agencies.
Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the Malyalam film features a stellar ensemble cast that includes Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh, Indrajith Sukumaran, Jerome Flynn, and Suraj Venjaramoodu in pivotal roles.
