Recent developments in the K-pop world have put HYBE under scrutiny. Internal documents containing controversial and offensive remarks about other K-pop groups have surfaced during a parliamentary audit. Allegations have emerged that Bang Si Hyuk, the Chairman and Founder of HYBE, was involved in the distribution of this report, raising questions about his accountability.
South Korean news outlet Ilgan Sports reported that Bang Si Hyuk had participated in the process of disseminating the document to senior executives within HYBE and its subsidiary labels. The report further indicated that he instructed the inclusion of a newly appointed executive as a recipient of the document.
While it remains unclear if Bang Si Hyuk directly ordered the creation of the report, his involvement in its distribution has sparked significant backlash. Critics argue that by allowing the circulation of a document filled with provocative and derogatory content, Bang Si Hyuk bears responsibility for the ensuing controversy.
Reportedly, HYBE's CEO Lee Jae Sang issued a formal apology on the company’s official website. Acknowledging the inappropriate nature of the document, Lee stated, "I deeply regret that provocative and crude expressions directed at K-pop artists were included, along with the subjective opinions and evaluations of the author. I take full responsibility on behalf of the company."
In response to the scandal, HYBE announced the dismissal of Kang, the individual responsible for preparing the ‘Weekly Music Industry Report.’ The company also confirmed that such reports would no longer be produced. However, with Bang Si Hyuk’s involvement now in the spotlight, some speculate that HYBE’s actions might be an attempt to deflect blame.

The controversial report came to light on October 24, 2024, when Min Hyung Bae, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, revealed it during a parliamentary audit. The document included offensive remarks about the appearances of idols, such as: “They debuted at an age when everyone looks their worst,” “Their features don’t stand out, and they’ve undergone too much plastic surgery,” and “most of the members are shockingly unattractive.”
HYBE clarified that the report was intended for internal reference and was a compilation of public opinions and trends from online communities and social media.
