On the occasion of his birthday today, we celebrate the multifaceted career of Prithviraj Sukumaran, who has carved an indelible mark in Indian cinema with his versatility and talent.

Born on October 16, 1982, to renowned actors Sukumaran and Mallika Sukumaran, Prithviraj was destined for a career in films. Starting from his school days in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, where he excelled in debates and theatre, his journey took a decisive turn when he was introduced to director Ranjith by filmmaker Fazil. Prithviraj landed his debut role in Nandanam (2002), a film that would set the stage for a flourishing career.

After facing a few initial setbacks, he bounced back with Classmates (2006), the year’s highest-grossing Malayalam film. That same year, he earned the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his role in Vaasthavam, becoming the youngest to achieve this accolade. Prithviraj’s artistic range expanded as he made his Tamil cinema debut with Kana Kandaen (2005) and ventured into playback singing with Puthiya Mukham (2009). He later secured a second Kerala State Film Award for his roles in Ayalum Njanum Thammil and Celluloid (2010).

Prithviraj transitioned into production with the co-founding of August Cinema in 2010. His productions, including Urumi (2011) and Indian Rupee (2011), received widespread recognition, with the latter bagging the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. His acting prowess was also acknowledged in Tamil cinema, earning the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Villain for Kaaviya Thalaivan (2014). Following a successful streak with films like Ennu Ninte Moideen (2015) and Ezra (2017), Prithviraj established his own production house, Prithviraj Productions, in 2017, which first backed the sci-fi thriller 9 (2019).
