Host Trevor Noah made a bold statement at the 67th annual Grammy Awards, using his opening monologue to take a jab at US President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. Hosting the prestigious music event for the fifth consecutive year, Noah didn’t hold back as he addressed political changes in Washington with his signature wit.
Noah made a quick joke about the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration. "We're going to be honoring the best in music as voted on by the 13,000 members of the Recording Academy," Noah said, "and 20 million illegal immigrants."
The South African comedian went on to comment on how he's going to enjoy the night because it "may be the last time I host anything in this country."
"I don’t know if you noticed, but there have been a few changes in Washington," he quipped. "So I’m going to enjoy tonight because it may be the last time I get to host anything in this country."
Social media was abuzz with mixed responses. While some users on X (formerly Twitter) praised Noah for his fearless humour, others expressed their discontent. One viewer posted, "Trevor Noah didn’t waste any time taking a jab at President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. #Grammys." Another fan remarked, "He’s so real for that, tbh," while someone else joked, "Trevor Noah on the Grammys throwing low blows at Trump," accompanied by laughing emojis.
However, not everyone appreciated his politically charged humour. A disgruntled viewer tweeted, "If Donald Trump gets Trevor Noah banned, I won’t be mad." Another wrote, "Bye bye! We need someone better hosting." Some even claimed Noah’s joke had turned them off from the event entirely, with one person noting, "My mother had the Grammys on and already turned it off with Trevor Noah making a Trump joke not even five minutes in."

Noah didn’t hold back on other celebrity jokes. He poked fun at Nick Cannon’s growing family before turning his attention to Beyoncé, who led the night with 11 nominations. "She’s nominated in Best Country, Best Pop, Best Americana, and Best Melodic Rap. Yeah, Andre 3000 better watch out next year—she’s coming for that flute," he joked.
Despite the controversy surrounding his monologue, Noah once again proved why he remains a Grammys favourite. The star-studded event at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles featured dazzling performances from Dawes, Billie Eilish, and Sabrina Carpenter. Meanwhile, the show also took a moment to address the devastating wildfires in California, with CBS announcing fundraising efforts to support relief initiatives.
