In the world of showbiz, rumours and controversies often overshadow the truth. One such persistent rumour involved Shah Rukh Khan and popular rapper Honey Singh. For years, whispers circulated about an alleged incident where Shah Rukh Khan slapped Honey Singh during a tour in the United States, resulting in the rapper needing stitches. In his recently released documentary, Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous, Honey Singh finally addressed these rumours, setting the record straight.
The documentary, which provides an in-depth look into the rapper's life, opens with a compelling statement from Honey Singh: "Nine years later, let me tell you what really happened. Nobody knows what I'm going to tell you on camera now."
Honey Singh, known for his chart-topping hit Lungi Dance from Shah Rukh Khan's movie Chennai Express, recounted his experience during the tour. After the success of Lungi Dance, Shah Rukh Khan invited him to join a tour across the United States. Despite being overworked, Honey Singh accepted the offer.
During one of the tour stops in Chicago, Honey Singh found himself in a dire state, unable to perform. He explained, "When they took me to Chicago for the show, I said, 'I don't want to perform.' I was sure that I was going to die during that show. Everyone told me that I should get ready, but I refused. My managers came over, and they said, 'Why aren't you getting ready?' I said, 'I'm not going.'"
Desperate to avoid performing, Honey Singh took drastic measures. He shaved his head, thinking it would excuse him from taking the stage. "I went to the washroom, took a trimmer, and I shaved my hair off. I said, 'How will I perform now?' They said, 'Wear a cap and perform,'" he shared.
When shaving his head didn't work, Honey Singh resorted to a more extreme act. He smashed a coffee mug on his head, resulting in injuries that required stitches. He clarified that these injuries were the true source of his head stitches, not a slap from Shah Rukh Khan. "There was a coffee mug lying there. I picked it up and smashed it on my head," he said.
Addressing the rumours directly, Honey Singh stated, "Someone started the rumour that Shah Rukh Khan slapped me. That man loves me, he'll never raise his hand on me."
The documentary also featured Honey Singh's sister, who played a pivotal role in his recovery. Recounting the incident, she said, "I was in my room. He messaged that something is not right with me. He said can you come on Skype. And then he said, 'Mujhe please bacha lo, gudiya mujhe please bacha le' (Please save me, my doll). And then he disconnected." Following this distressing message, she made the decision to bring him back to India immediately.
Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous is now streaming on Netflix.
