After nearly eight years of an on-and-off relationship, Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson have reportedly called it quits for good, according to People magazine.
According to reports, the 48-year-old Coldplay frontman and the 35-year-old actress, who is most known for her role in Materialists, recently split up. Multiple sources have now confirmed the split, despite the fact that the couple was last spotted together in mid-May while out and about in Malibu, the seaside town where they had shared a residence since 2021.
"This time, it feels final," an insider told People. Martin and Johnson's representatives chose not to comment on the situation.
The couple, who were first romantically linked back in 2017, had largely kept their relationship private over the years, offering only rare glimpses into their bond. In January this year, the duo were spotted hand-in-hand in India during Coldplay’s tour, and just a few months earlier, in March 2024, a source claimed that they had actually been secretly engaged “for years”, following speculation that began circulating in 2020. Despite the engagement, they were “in no rush to get married.”
In August 2024, when split rumours surfaced, a rep for Johnson was quick to deny any trouble, affirming that the couple were “happily together.” At the time, another source had said, “Sure, they've had issues and taken breaks in the past, but things are great now. They both love their careers. They are balancing things the best they can.”
Fans were occasionally given a glimpse of Martin and Johnson's relationship. One particularly memorable instance was when Martin abruptly interrupted a promotional Zoom call for Cha Cha Real Smooth in January 2022, causing Johnson to laugh.
He had publicly declared his love for her at a Coldplay show in London a few months earlier.

Johnson had dated musician Matthew Hitt and actor Jordan Masterson before dating Martin. The announcement of the breakup coincides with Coldplay's ongoing, record-breaking Music of the Spheres world tour.
The tour earned over $67.4 million from performances throughout Asia, placing it at the top of the charts in April, according to Billboard Boxscore.
When their most recent album, Moon Music, was released in October, it peaked at number one on the Billboard 200.
