The Coldplay concert held at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium on Saturday attracted a massive crowd of 75,000 fans. While the event was a grand success for music lovers, it left behind a significant environmental concern. Around 9,000 kilograms of waste were generated by the audience, consisting mainly of plastic tiffin boxes, bottles, glasses, banned plastic bags, and cardboard food boxes. This translates to over 100 grams of waste per person.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), which is recognized for maintaining Navi Mumbai as one of India’s cleanest cities, quickly swung into action. The municipal body deployed 150 workers to handle waste segregation and disposal. The cleaning operation started at 10 PM after the concert and continued until 3 AM on Sunday to restore the area. NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde personally supervised the efforts, ensuring the surroundings of the stadium were left in pristine condition. By the next morning, early walkers and joggers were impressed with the cleanliness around the venue.
The municipal corporation had implemented a detailed waste management strategy for the event. This included strategically placed bins for proper segregation of waste. Plastic bottles were sent to recycling facilities, while organic waste was transported to Turbhe’s processing center. The NMMC also employed ten refuse vehicles to conduct 182 scheduled collections during the concert. This effort aligns with the Swachh Bharat Mission guidelines, showcasing Navi Mumbai’s commitment to sustainability and zero-waste initiatives.
Despite these efforts, the task ahead remains challenging, as two more Coldplay concerts are scheduled for Sunday and Tuesday. With over 200,000 tickets sold for the three-day concert series, NMMC officials are gearing up for an extended cleanup operation.
The concerts also aim to promote Navi Mumbai’s dedication to environmental responsibility. The management of such a massive crowd requires meticulous planning, and NMMC has set a strong example of how large-scale events can be handled without compromising on cleanliness and hygiene. Their efforts not only ensure a clean environment but also send a strong message about the importance of waste management and civic responsibility.
Such events, while enjoyable, highlight the need for more awareness among attendees about managing their waste. Carrying reusable containers, avoiding single-use plastics, and ensuring proper disposal of trash can significantly reduce the burden on civic workers.
The successful cleanup efforts by NMMC have earned praise from citizens and set a benchmark for other cities to follow. As large concerts and events become more frequent, it is crucial for all stakeholders, including organizers, attendees, and civic bodies, to work together for a cleaner and greener future.
