On Tuesday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told the Bombay High Court that it will complete its investigation into bribery allegations against former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officer Sameer Wankhede within three months.
The case is related to the 2021 Cordelia cruise drug bust, where Aryan Khan, son of Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, was arrested.
The CBI filed an FIR (First Information Report) against Wankhede, accusing him of demanding a Rs 25 crore bribe from Shah Rukh Khan in exchange for favourable treatment for his son.
The FIR was based on a complaint by the NCB, which alleged that Wankhede and his team tried to extort money by threatening to falsely implicate Aryan Khan in a drug case.
Wankhede has denied all charges. He claims that the case is politically motivated and has submitted text messages with Shah Rukh Khan to prove that their conversations were respectful and did not suggest any wrongdoing.
During the hearing, Justices A.S. Gadkari and Rajesh Patil expressed concern about the delay in the investigation. They questioned how long the CBI would take to finish the probe, asking sarcastically whether it would take
“10 or 20 years.” The judges asked for a clear timeline.
CBI lawyer Kuldeep Patil first requested more time, but the court pushed for a definite answer. He finally confirmed that the investigation would be completed in three months.
Impact on Wankhede and Court's Direction
Wankhede’s lawyer, Senior Advocate Aabad Ponda, told the court that the delay is affecting his client’s career. He said Wankhede’s promotion is on hold due to the pending case and asked the court to consider this when making decisions.
The court refused to grant any further delays and set a strict timeline.
However, it allowed the CBI to file a chargesheet if needed, as long as it takes permission from the court first.
Meanwhile, the court extended the interim protection already given to Wankhede. This means he cannot be arrested or face any harsh actions during the investigation period.
The case remains under close watch, with the next steps depending on the CBI’s findings in the coming months.
