Fifteen years after 3 Idiots became a cultural phenomenon, the blockbuster is officially set to return with a sequel featuring its iconic cast. According to Pinkvilla, Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi will reunite for 3 Idiots 2, with filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani back in the director’s chair. The project will be backed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra alongside Hirani and Aamir Khan.

A source close to the development was quoted saying that the long-awaited sequel is finally moving forward. “The script has been locked, and the team is extremely excited for it. They feel the magic of the first film has returned, and is as funny, as emotional, and as meaningful as the first part,” the insider said. According to the same source, the film is scheduled to go on floors in the second half of 2026.

The sequel will continue the story of Rancho, Farhan, Raju and Pia, picking up nearly a decade and a half after audiences last saw them together. “The story will be a continuation, picking up nearly 15 years after the characters went their separate ways in the climax scene and reunite for a new adventure,” the source added. While the nostalgia of the original will be preserved, the upcoming film will reportedly introduce new humour and emotional layers shaped by the characters’ grown-up journeys.

Reportedly, Rajkumar Hirani had been contemplating a sequel for years but only recently found the right moment to commit to it. His ambitious Dadasaheb Phalke biopic, planned with Aamir Khan, has been put on hold.
