The lifeguards are back. Fox has officially given a straight-to-series order to a Baywatch reboot, confirming the long-rumored revival of the 1990s global juggernaut.
The network announced it has ordered 12 episodes for the 2026-27 season, with Burn Notice creator Matt Nix set as showrunner and executive producer.
After months of speculation, the reboot is now locked in. Fremantle, which owns the franchise, is partnering with Fox Entertainment to bring the new take to screens.
The setup and possible locations
The original Baywatch was filmed in Los Angeles before later moving to Hawaii. This time, Southern California will remain the setting, though Fox has reportedly weighed filming in Australia depending on tax credits. Either way, the new series promises the same mix of high-stakes rescues, tangled romances, and slow-motion runs in the iconic red swimsuits — but with a brand-new cast and a modern edge.
Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network, called the franchise a cultural phenomenon. “In its first run, Baywatch defined an entire era of beach life and elevated lifeguards to iconic status. Now we’re bringing that California dream to a whole new generation,” he said.
A legacy to live up to
The original Baywatch debuted in 1989 on NBC but was canceled after one season. It then roared back in syndication, eventually airing in more than 200 countries and reportedly pulling in over a billion viewers weekly at its peak. The series not only starred David Hasselhoff but also launched the careers of Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, Jason Momoa, and Yasmine Bleeth.
For Fremantle, keeping that legacy intact is crucial. “Baywatch has always been a treasured asset in Fremantle’s portfolio,” said Christian Vesper, CEO Global Drama. “With Matt Nix at the helm, we are in great hands. Our goal is to reconnect with existing fans while introducing a new generation to these famous lifeguards.”
