The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has launched a Model Curriculum for Minor Degree in Defence Technology for undergraduate engineering and technology students. Launched by AICTE Chairman T.G. Sitharam alongside senior defence and industry leaders, the programme is being hailed as a game-changer for students dreaming of careers in DRDO, Armed Forces, and defence manufacturing.
What Makes This Course a Game-Changer?
The Defence Technology minor degree will give engineering students specialised knowledge in missiles, drones, aeronautical systems, naval technologies, weapon systems, cybersecurity, and advanced materials. The curriculum also includes field visits, seminars, and hands-on projects to ensure students gain practical exposure.
“India is undergoing a significant transformation in the defence sector, and nurturing skilled talent is critical for Atmanirbhar Bharat,” said Sitharam, highlighting how the programme will bridge the gap between classrooms and the nation’s defence needs.
Backed by Industry & Armed Forces
Drafted after extensive consultations with the Armed Forces, DRDO, defence manufacturers, and academia, the curriculum balances real-world industry requirements with academic training.
“Until now, India’s defence industry has struggled due to a lack of industry-ready manpower. This initiative will bridge that gap,” noted SIDM President Rajinder Singh Bhatia.
Why Students Should Care
With India’s defence sector expanding rapidly under the Make in India push, the demand for engineers trained in cutting-edge defence technology is at an all-time high. This new course could be a direct pathway to high-profile careers in DRDO, Armed Forces, and top defence manufacturing firms.
AICTE says the launch reaffirms its commitment to align national priorities with higher education, preparing the next generation of engineers to lead India’s march towards a self-reliant defence ecosystem.
