India observes Rani Lakshmibai Jayanti each year to honour the bravery and patriotism of the Queen of Jhansi, one of the most iconic figures in Indian history. Her birth anniversary on November 19, is a time to remember her extraordinary contribution to the country’s fight for independence.

Born on 19 November 1828 in Varanasi, Rani Lakshmibai, originally named Manikarnika, grew up showing remarkable strength and intelligence. After her marriage to Raja Gangadhar Rao, she became the Queen of Jhansi, gaining prominence for her leadership during the 1857 First War of Independence.

Her courage came to the forefront after her husband's death, when the British East India Company attempted to annex her kingdom under the Doctrine of Lapse. Refusing to surrender, she declared, “I shall not surrender my Jhansi,” embodying the spirit of defiance against colonial rule.

As a fearless leader, Rani Lakshmibai mobilised her army, turning Jhansi into a stronghold of resistance. Her tactical brilliance and unwavering resolve made her a central figure in the 1857 uprising. Though vastly outnumbered, she led her forces into battle against the British, refusing to submit even in the face of defeat. Her final stand came in June 1858, during the Battle of Gwalior, where she fought valiantly but was fatally wounded. Her sacrifice transformed her into a martyr and a symbol of freedom for generations to come.
