Nagaland University, the only Central University in the state, is set to introduce a new Undergraduate Program in Basic Sciences from the academic year 2025-26. This initiative aims to enhance world-class research and expand the frontiers of basic sciences, covering a broad spectrum from material sciences to life sciences.
The university also plans to establish a Multidisciplinary Research Centre, which will facilitate more programs in Basic Sciences, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The policy emphasizes higher education's role in fostering human and societal well-being and advancing India as a democratic, just, and culturally enriched nation.
Initially, the Multidisciplinary Research Centre will offer three-year and four-year undergraduate programs in the following disciplines:
- Botany
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Zoology
In the coming years, the university plans to expand its offerings to include:
- Integrated Postgraduate Programs (Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Zoology)
- Ph.D. Programs in all sciences and social sciences with a focus on multidisciplinary research
- Integrated Ph.D. (PG + Ph.D.) Programs in all sciences and social sciences
The Undergraduate/ Integrated Postgraduate programs will commence with an intake of 50 students across the five disciplines in the 2025-26 academic year.
Eligibility Criteria for Admission
To apply for the Undergraduate/ Integrated Postgraduate programs, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Secure a first-class (60%) throughout their academic record up to Class 12 or an equivalent examination.
- Hold a valid CUET (UG) scorecard in the relevant discipline.
The new program aims to equip students with a well-rounded education across arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences while allowing for specialization in major and minor disciplines. Students will also have the option to change their major within their chosen broad discipline at the end of their first year, with more flexibility expected in the future.
