The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced the results for the Civil Services mains examination 2023 on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, with Aditya Srivastava grabbing the All India Rank (AIR) 1.
Srivastava was followed by Animesh Pradhan, Donuru Ananya Reddy, P K Sidharth Ramkumar, and Ruhani in the top five candidates on the list. However, the toppers did not follow a conventional strategy to pursue their dream of securing their position among the top five in the coveted UPSC CSE results, and rather a mix of methods to achieve the same.
Appearing for a third time, Srivastava left his job at multinational consulting firm Goldman Sach in 2020 to prepare for the civil services examination. He appeared in 2021 but failed to clear prelims. However, the following year, he secured AIR 236.
Not satisfied with the success so far, he appeared for a third attempt and secured the top rank. Srivastava’s preparation involved only taking mock tests and interviews from institutions. He relied heavily on previous years’ questions for his preparation.
Central to his strategy was a meticulous analysis of previous years' question papers and a thorough understanding of the exam syllabus. “In my first attempt I was collecting information only. I did not analyse PYQ’S that how UPSC designs the statement to test one’s analytical skills. How UPSC mixes wrong statements with correct ones to confuse candidates and how one should analyse that? I was doing more hard work rather than smart work. This is what I learnt from first attempt,” he shared in an interview with Indian Masterminds after his second successful attempt.
Ayan Jain secured AIR 16, a major jump from 87 and dedicated his spectacular journey to analysis of previous years' question papers, according to an ANI report. For those who've faced setbacks on the path to civil service, he suggested not letting discouragement dim your aspirations. He recommended analyzing your past approaches, identifying areas for growth, and refining your strategy.
Sameer Khode is part of another noteworthy success who achieved a remarkable jump, going from a rank of 551 to 42. The candidate, an alumnus of IIM-Lucknow, attributed their improvement to a shift in their approach to the optional political science subject. He emphasized incorporating his insights and experiences, along with leveraging data analysis whenever applicable, rather than solely relying on rote memorization of theoretical concepts.
A young man from Kolhapur, Ashish Patil, who is 26 years old, saw a dramatic improvement in his ranking, jumping an impressive 416 spots from 563 to 147. Patil emphasised the significance of refining his approach to studying and fortifying his self-belief as key factors in his success.
A total of 1016 candidates have received recommendations for appointment, with the UPSC releasing the roll numbers of the qualified candidates. However, the candidature of 355 recommended candidates remains provisional pending further verification.
