IIT JEE Supreme Court Hearing 2025: SC to hear plea challenging JEE Advanced attempt limit reduction today

JEE Advanced 2025: The Supreme Court is set to hear a batch of petitions challenging the recent decision by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) to reduce the attempt limit for the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Advanced from three to two.

The matter was originally listed for hearing on January 7th but was not taken up due to another matter being heard by the bench. The counsel for the petitioners orally mentioned the petition and requested an early hearing, citing the imminent commencement of JEE Advanced 2025 registrations and the exam scheduled for May 18. The Solicitor General of India, while opposing the petition, did not object to an early hearing.

This legal challenge stems from a controversial decision by the JAB. In November 2024, the Board initially increased the attempt limit for JEE Advanced to three. However, this decision was reversed within a short period, and the two-attempt policy was reinstated.

The JAB issued a press release on November 18th, 2024, stating: "The Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to restore the earlier eligibility criterion used in previous years pertaining to the number of attempts in JEE (Advanced), in supersession of the criterion mentioned in Press Release dated November 05, 2024. This has been done after considering various competing requirements in the meeting of JAB held on November 15, 2024. This has resulted in restoring the earlier eligibility criteria followed since 2013. All other eligibility criteria remain same."
