Gurugram’s long-standing infrastructure and civic challenges may soon see significant improvement as the Haryana government finalises a comprehensive action plan aimed at transforming the city’s governance model.
According to The Tribune, the proposed measures covering sanitation, drainage, stray animals and waste management could set a benchmark as Gurugram’s “Model of Governance” for other cities in the state if successfully implemented.
Chief Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Rajesh Khullar, outlined the plan during meetings with municipal councillors and district officers.
The strategy, shaped by feedback from resident welfare associations and civic groups, includes a major upgrade to Gurugram’s drainage and sewage systems.
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has proposed linking key stormwater drains to the Najafgarh drain to mitigate chronic waterlogging, while sewage treatment capacity is set to nearly double from 408 million litres per day (MLD) to 950 MLD by 2028 through new and upgraded plants across the city, The Tribune reported.
Khullar issued stern directives to officials during the discussions, particularly addressing public safety hazards. Citing frequent monsoon-related accidents involving live power lines, he instructed Police Commissioner Vikas Arora to file cases against negligent engineers if such incidents recur.
Power department staff have also been barred from taking leave until November, with orders to conduct field inspections and ensure proper maintenance of electrical infrastructure.
Open garbage burning and illegal waste dumping emerged as critical concerns.
The Tribune reported that Khullar directed municipal and police authorities to impound vehicles transporting waste into Gurugram from other areas and prosecute offending agencies.
Station house officers have been tasked with increased vigilance to curb open burning, while municipal teams must clear roads of stray cattle and construction debris.
During talks with Mayor Rajrani Malhotra and councillors, Khullar reaffirmed Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini’s commitment to resolving Gurugram’s civic issues.
He assured that positive results will be visible soon, urging local representatives to collaborate in executing the plan.
