The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh red alert for the national capital as the temperature soared up to 45 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. IMD has said that the extreme heat conditions will continue in Delhi and its surrounding areas for the next two days.
The weather unit has reported that heatwave conditions will persist over NCR for the next few days and the temperatures will range between 44 and 46 degrees Celsius. On Wednesday, Safdarjung recorded 43.8 degrees Celsius, while Ayanagar was the hottest spot at 45.5 degrees Celsius. Both these temperatures are above normal levels for this time of the year.
Meanwhile, Delhi also reported a humidity level of about 39 per cent in the early hours of the day. The combination of dry winds and heat made it more uncomfortable throughout the day.
What does a red alert mean?
A red alert in any particular city means that IMD has advised residents to avoid exposure to the sun and to stay hydrated. It also means that people should limit outdoor activities. Further, the red alert also highlights a very high risk of heat illnesses that include heatstroke, especially for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly, News18 reported.
"From June 13, a western disturbance is likely to bring light rain and thunderstorms, providing some relief," Dr Naresh Kumar, a senior scientist with IMD said. “Delhi-NCR is under red alert today and tomorrow, followed by an orange alert on June 13. Light rain and thunderstorms are possible on the night of June 13 due to a western disturbance, which may bring some relief," he added.
