A 40-year-old man died by self-immolation near a police booth in Madurai on Thursday evening, allegedly in protest against the non-lighting of the Karthigai Deepam atop Thiruparankundram hill, despite an earlier order of the Madras High Court.

Police identified the deceased as Poorna Chandran, a resident of Narimedu. He is survived by his wife and two sons, aged four and eight. Chandran worked as a medical representative and also owned a mini auto, which he used to sell fruits and vegetables across the city.

According to preliminary investigations, Chandran left behind a voicemail explaining the reasons for taking the extreme step. Police said the incident occurred near a police booth close to the Outpost area. A case has been registered, and an investigation is under way.

The incident triggered political reactions, with BJP leader K Annamalai condemning the DMK government and alleging an "anti-Hindu" stance. In a post on X, Annamalai expressed condolences to Chandran's family and claimed that the government's refusal to allow devotees to light the Karthigai Deepam on the Deepa Thoon atop Thiruparankundram hill led to the tragedy. He also appealed to devotees to remain calm, exercise restraint, and place their faith in the judiciary.
