A 23-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh’s Etawah was saved from taking his own life after a timely intervention by police, who were alerted through Meta’s suicide prevention mechanism.
The incident took place late on Wednesday, September 4, when the Social Media Center at Police Headquarters in Lucknow received an alert at 11.33 pm about a disturbing post made on social media, India Today reported.
In his post, the young man had declared that he was sitting on a railway track and intended to die that night. Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Krishna immediately directed officers to trace the man. His mobile number and location were quickly tracked to the Civil Lines police station area of Etawah district.
A local police team rushed to his residence and arrived there in less than 10 minutes. However, when they did not find him at home, officers immediately moved towards the nearby railway tracks. Acting swiftly, they intercepted him on the way, convinced him not to harm himself, and brought him back home safely.
During counselling, the youth revealed that he was originally from Agra and had shifted to Etawah to prepare for competitive exams. He confessed that he was under severe mental strain because of financial difficulties, including his inability to pay rent.
After speaking to him and offering reassurance, police ensured he felt supported. The young man later promised not to attempt such an act again. His family expressed gratitude to the police for their quick and compassionate response.
The suicide alert-sharing arrangement launched in 2022 between Meta and Uttar Pradesh Police has already saved 1,335 lives between January 1, 2023, and August 31, 2025.
