A woman in Aligarh district jumped from the roof of her second-floor house after her husband allegedly tortured her and ordered her to jump. The incident took place on August 1 in Daunkoli village of Gonda block.
The woman, Archana, 35, flung herself from the second floor in a state of fear and panic. Though she survived the fall, she was allegedly thrased by her in-laws after landing. She suffered several fractures and is now admitted to a government hospital for treatment.
The matter only came to public attention when a 38-second video of the incident, allegedly recorded by a neighbour, surfaced on social media on Tuesday evening. Soon after, police registered a case against five members of her in-laws’ family, including her husband. The accused, however, are absconding. Police officials said further details about her condition will be known after receiving the full medical report.
“After the medical report of the woman is received, we will know what kind of injuries she sustained. A team of police were also pressed to arrest the accused. Preliminary investigation suggests that the woman took the step following a dispute between the husband and wife. The woman is being treated at a govt hospital,” Iglas DSP Mahesh Kumar was quoted by TOI as saying.
According to Archana’s brother, Ankit Kumar, his sister had been harassed over dowry since her marriage six years ago. He alleged that her husband, Sonu Singh (40), along with his father Prempal, mother Nehni Devi, brother Pramod, and sister-in-law Durgesh Devi, repeatedly demanded additional dowry.
The demands included Rs 5 lakh in cash and a Bullet motorcycle. Despite Archana giving birth to a son and a daughter, there was no improvement in the way her in-laws treated her, he added.
Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered under the Dowry Prohibition Act, and efforts are being made to arrest the accused.
