Delhi experienced its hottest day of the season on Monday, reaching a temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung, which is significantly higher than the usual temperature for this time of year. This heatwave has been warned about by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier this week, affecting not just Delhi but also several areas in northwest and central India.
In Palam, temperatures climbed to 39.5 degrees Celsius, exceeding the seasonal average by four degrees. A yellow alert has been issued for Delhi on Monday and Tuesday, indicating that people should be cautious. The weather department expects the heat to continue with maximum temperatures hitting between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius from Monday through Wednesday.
Last Sunday, the highest temperature recorded was 38.2 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung, three degrees above normal. The previous Saturday saw temperatures at 35.7 degrees Celsius. The hottest day so far this season was on April 3 when it reached 39 degrees.
Meanwhile, the air quality in Delhi stands at 'poor.'
The heatwave is not just isolated to Delhi; it is expected to hit parts of northern and central India too. Some areas in Himachal Pradesh might feel the heat on April 7, while Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab could experience similar conditions from April 7 to 10. Parts of western Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are also likely to face high temperatures during those dates.
Additionally, about 21 cities in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, and Maharashtra are forecasted to have high temperatures in the days ahead.
