On the very first day of shifting operations from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1, passengers at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) faced delays and inconveniences due to a technical issue that disrupted the check-in process on Tuesday.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) issued a passenger advisory to acknowledge the disruption. “We experienced a technical issue at the T1 check-in. Our teams, along with stakeholders, are working to resolve it, and operations are normalizing. We regret the inconvenience caused,” stated the airport.
Terminal 1 primarily serves low-cost domestic carriers and experiences a high volume of passenger traffic, especially during peak hours. Terminal 2 has been closed for maintenance work.
In a related update, IndiGo, one of the major airlines operating from Terminal 1, tweeted: “If you’re at #DelhiT1, please expect longer wait times at check-in and baggage collection following a baggage belt failure. Our teams are working closely with the airport to resolve this quickly. We regret the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”
Previously, only IndiGo and Akasa Air operated flights from Terminal 2, which had been in service for nearly 40 years. All flight operations from Terminal 2 have now completely transitioned to Terminal 1, reported Economics Times.
On Monday, IndiGo announced that it had taken proactive measures to ensure customers were well-informed about the change in terminals. Akasa Air also stated that its teams were diligently working to ensure a seamless transition of operations from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1.
DIAL noted that the expanded Terminal 1 can accommodate 40 million passengers annually, while Terminal 3 can handle 45 million passengers. In contrast, Terminal 2 had an annual capacity of 15 million passengers.
Civil Aviation Secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam assured on Monday that Terminals 1 and 3 would be capable of managing the increased passenger traffic and emphasized that there is unlikely to be congestion due to the closure of Terminal 2. Indira Gandhi International Airport handles approximately 1,300 flight movements daily.
