A heated altercation took place between the families of a senior IPS officer and an income tax commissioner during the IPL match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings match at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday night.
The incident occurred in the Diamond Box of the stadium, an area reserved for top officials and guests, where the families of both officers clashed over seat allocation. The altercation started when the IPS officer’s daughter stepped away to use the washroom, leaving her purse behind. A man, later identified as a relative of the income tax official, allegedly occupied the seat. When her brother requested him to vacate the seat, an argument ensued.
“Soon, the sister joined her brother while the man was joined by his wife, the income tax official, and their son. The argument intensified with each hurling abuse at the other. At one point, the confrontation between the IPS officer's daughter and the man almost went out of control as the man was arguing in her face," a senior police official told TOI.
The IPS officer and his wife, who were watching the match on television, rushed to the stadium and also contacted senior police officials seeking intervention. With no immediate help available, the officer’s wife took her children out of the stadium and filed a complaint at the Cubbon Park police station.
In her complaint, she alleged that the man had made “unwelcome physical contact” with her daughter and “intruded on her privacy with the intention to offend her.” She also said her son had captured parts of the incident on video and noted that there were no police personnel present in the Diamond Box during the altercation, which reportedly took place between 9.40 pm and 10.20 pm.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 351 (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult), 75 (sexual harassment), and 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman). The two accused, the man and his wife, were summoned to the police station about two hours later and were allowed to leave after initial inquiry.
Senior police officers have so far declined to comment on the matter, citing the sensitive positions of those involved. “One is a senior IPS officer, the other a top income tax official. We are in a difficult position,” an officer familiar with the case told TOI. An investigation is underway.
