Trump unveils new US tariffs on dozens of countries

US President Donald Trump sparked fresh controversy on Thursday by signing an executive order imposing new tariffs of up to 41% on imports from dozens of countries. Citing emergency powers, Trump claimed the move is aimed at reducing the nation’s trade deficits with key partners.

The increase in tariffs on Canadian goods to 35% threatens to further strain an already tense trade relationship. Meanwhile, Thailand and Cambodia despite reportedly reaching last-minute agreements were still hit with a 19% duty. In contrast, Mexico was granted a 90-day extension to continue negotiating improved trade terms.

The White House also confirmed that the “universal” tariff will remain at 10%, consistent with the rate set on April 2. However, countries running trade surpluses with the US now face elevated tariffs of 15% or more, as President Trump pushes forward with his broader effort to overhaul international trade dynamics.

New Zealand is planning to seek a review of the 15% tariff imposed on its exports to the United States.
