Thailand says Cambodia must declare ceasefire first as deadly border clashes drag on

Thailand insists Cambodia must be the first to declare a ceasefire to halt deadly border fighting, as clashes continue despite mediation efforts and claims of an agreed truce.

Thailand said on Tuesday that Cambodia must take the first step in declaring a ceasefire to end fighting between the two neighbours, after more than a week of deadly clashes along their disputed border.

“As the aggressor onto Thai territory, Cambodia must announce the ceasefire first,” Thai foreign ministry spokeswoman Maratee Nalita Andamo told reporters in Bangkok. She added that Phnom Penh must also cooperate in border de-mining efforts “sincerely”.

The renewed violence between the Southeast Asian neighbours this month has killed at least 34 people — both soldiers and civilians — and forced around 800,000 people to flee their homes, officials said.

Cambodia’s interior ministry said 17 civilians had been killed on its side.
