In a statement issued through his office, Clinton criticised the way the files were disclosed, arguing that partial releases only deepen public distrust. He said the approach raises troubling questions about whether key information is being deliberately withheld.

‘Someone or something is being protected’

Angel Urena, Clinton’s spokesperson, said the manner of disclosure itself points to a deeper problem. “What the Department of Justice has released so far, and the manner in which it did so, shows that someone or something is being protected,” Urena said. “We do not know whom, what, or why.”
