Israel on Sunday said it carried out airstrikes on Houthi military positions in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa. Targets included locations near the presidential palace, power plants, and a fuel storage facility, according to the Israeli military.
"The strikes were conducted in response to repeated attacks by the Houthi terrorist regime against the state of Israel and its civilians, including the launching of surface-to-surface missiles and UAVs toward Israeli territory in recent days," the military said in a statement.
Sanaa residents said the strikes targeted areas near the presidential complex, missile bases, and oil and power stations.
Houthi media said Israeli strikes on Yemen's rebel-held capital Sanaa on Sunday killed at least two people.
The Iran-backed Huthis' Al-Masirah TV reported a preliminary toll of "two dead and five wounded following the Israeli attack" on an oil company facility in the city, news agency AFP reported.
The Israel Air Force (IAF) on Sunday said its fighter jets targeted military infrastructure of the Houthi forces in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
According to the IAF, the strikes hit a military compound housing the presidential palace, the Asar and Hizaz power stations, and a fuel storage facility — all allegedly used to support Houthi military operations.
“The attacks were carried out in response to repeated attacks by the Houthi terror regime against the State of Israel and its citizens, including the launching of ground-to-ground missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles toward the country’s territory,” the IAF said in a statement.
It added that the presidential palace in Sanaa was located inside a military compound from which Houthi operations are directed, while the Hizaz and Asar power plants were used as “significant infrastructure for electricity supply for military activities.”
“The attack on the power stations disrupts the production and supply of electricity for military purposes, and the use of these stations constitutes another example of the military use that the Houthi terror regime makes of civilian infrastructure,” the IAF further stated.
Accusing the Houthis of acting under “Iranian direction and funding,” the IAF said the group exploits maritime routes to carry out attacks on global shipping.
“The IDF will act with force against the repeated and ongoing attacks by the Houthi terror regime against the State of Israel and is determined to continue to strike with force at every threat to the citizens of the State of Israel, at any distance required,” the IAF warned.
On Friday, the Houthis said they had fired a ballistic missile towards Israel. An Israeli Air Force official said on Sunday the missile most likely carried several sub-munitions "intended to be detonated upon impact".
"This is the first time that this kind of missile has been launched from Yemen," the official said.
Since Israel's war in Gaza against the Palestinian militant group Hamas began in October 2023, the Iran-aligned Houthis have attacked vessels in the Red Sea in what they describe as acts of solidarity with the Palestinians.
They have also frequently fired missiles towards Israel, most of which have been intercepted. Israel has responded with strikes on Houthi-controlled areas, including the vital Hodeidah port.
