As the global effects of Donald Trump’s tariff war become evident, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the current US president poses the greatest risk to the country's economy.

Carney made these remarks during a televised debate in Montreal, which included Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, left-wing New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh, former Liberal ally, and Bloc Québécois head Yves-François Blanchet. The debate took place ahead of the vote on 28 April for a new Prime Minister.

Carney emphasised the importance of cooperation among Canadian provinces to resist the US trade war effectively.

Trump’s reciprocal tariffs on various countries were first introduced on 2 April, but within days, he announced a 90-day pause after global markets suffered a significant crash. He stated that several countries were willing to negotiate a trade deal to avoid these reciprocal tariffs.
