In a bid to enhance tourist safety, provide on-ground assistance, and promote responsible tourism, the Meghalaya government has rolled out a people-first initiative called the ‘Tourist Buddies’ program. Launched across four of the state's most visited destinations—Shillong, Sohra (Cherrapunji), Dawki, and Mawlynnong—this new program is designed to ensure travellers enjoy a seamless, informative, and secure experience while exploring the natural beauty of Meghalaya.

The ‘Tourist Buddies’ scheme is a collaborative effort by the Meghalaya Department of Tourism and the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS). The initiative trains local youth to become tourism ambassadors, stationed at key hotspots to offer assistance, safety support, and cultural insight to tourists.

With professional training in hospitality, first aid, safety protocols, communication, and cultural awareness, these Tourist Buddies serve as friendly guides, local experts, and safety personnel, helping to bridge the gap between visitors and local authorities.
