Snapchat is facing a global outage on October 20 as part of the broader Amazon Web Services (AWS) disruption affecting multiple online platforms worldwide. According to data from Downdetector, user complaints surged sharply in the afternoon, indicating a major service disruption rather than isolated accounts or regional network failures. The outage coincides with the ongoing AWS incident in the US-East-1 region, which has already impacted several applications and cloud-integrated services.
Key problems faced by users
The majority of reports on Downdetector are linked to login failures, accounting for more than 90 percent of complaints. Remaining reports indicate issues with feed loading and media uploads. Users on Android, iOS and desktop platforms are facing unresponsive timelines, failed authentication attempts, and broken media loading. The outage appears to be global in nature, with complaints emerging simultaneously from multiple countries according to Downdetector’s heat map.
Because Snapchat relies on AWS for backend services such as authentication, database operations and delivery, failures inside the US-East-1 region have cascaded to the app’s front-end functionality. Users attempting to sign in or refresh their feed are receiving repeated errors or timeouts, consistent with AWS-linked backend failures.
No official response yet
As of now, Snapchat has not issued a public statement or acknowledged the outage on its official support channels. The company’s status page does not list any active incident or recovery timeline. AWS has confirmed ongoing errors and high latency across services tied to the US-East-1 region, noting that mitigations are in progress but intermittent failures may continue until systems stabilize.
Since the Snapchat disruption is directly tied to the AWS outage, restoration is expected to depend on Amazon’s progress. Until AWS completes recovery, users may continue to face login rejections, failed uploads and delays across the app. The issue remains active at the time of writing.
