Samsung has recently unveiled its exciting new dynamic HDR format, HDR10+ Advanced, which will first appear on its higher-end TV models releasing in 2026. Following Dolby's announcement of Dolby Vision 2, the HDR10+ Advanced launch signals the next phase of competition in high dynamic range (HDR) technology, promising to deliver brighter highlights, richer colours, and smoother motion.
HDR10+ Advanced: Key upgrades
According to a report by Forbes, HDR10+ Advanced adds six new features designed to take full advantage of the latest display tech, like Mini LED and Micro LED panels that can reach up to 5,000 nits of brightness. Moreover, the revised standard is expected to offer genre-based options for tone mapping and picture processing, intelligent motion-smoothing options, a mode for cloud gaming, more zones for local tone mapping, and more accurate colour performance.
Another feature HDR10+ Advanced will use is AI-based content recognition and metadata offered by creators to adjust tone mapping automatically. The genre will also have an Advanced Colour Control, which refines colour metadata for smoother and more accurate gradation. Moreover, HDR10+ Advanced will apply real-time tone mapping for cloud-based HDR gaming, adapting brightness to the room's lighting.
Samsung has not yet showcased a working model to showcase the HDR10+ Advanced technology. However, the company previewed a comparison on its 115-inch Micro RGB TV, with a full technical demonstration expected at CES 2026 in January. Amazon Prime Video has already committed to supporting HDR10+ Advanced, and with Dolby's recent announcement of Dolby Vision 2, this launch signals the next phase of competition in the picture quality department.
