The Painkiller reboot is set in Purgatory, where you can play as one of the four Champions: Ink, Void, Sol and Roch. As per the game’s lore, the Creator gives you a chance to redeem yourself or "be lost to darkness". Your task is to stop the demonic armies of the fallen angel Azazel from destroying Earth.

Each Painkiller Champion comes with unique perks. To gain the upper hand on the enemies, players can make use of tarot cards in the game to enhance their abilities and combine them with others.
